I had my mirena IUD inserted in Dec 2007. I have always been very fit, but when I have been pregnant, my body gains significant amounts of weight, all of which come right off after the baby is born. I have 2 children, 5 and 10 years old. I was done having children in 2004, and had excess abdominal skin due to significant weight gain during pregnancy. In 2006, I had abdomnioplasty to remove the excess skin. I didn't want anymore children so I opted for the Morena IUD. I fainted right after they inserted the IUD, but I was told that it is a reaction from the cervix being distrubed. After, I bled heavily off and on for 6 months. My weight was still fine though, I was at 18% body fat (which is lean for a female), but 3 months after I had it inserted, I started to get acne, I couldn't figure out why, I blamed it on stress because at the time I had a very stressful corporate job. I also started getting severe anxiety and inability to concentrate or sleep (and my children sleep well). I lost all interest in sex about 6 months after I had the Morena inserted, but I just figured it was due to my bad marraige - which is probably part of it. I left my corporate job about 7 months after the IUD was inserted and became a full-time personal trainer and aerobics instructor. I am a nutritionist also. I closley monitor what I eat, I exercise everyday, etc...After leaving my corporate job, my weight started to creep up - about 8 lb. or so, I didn't think much of it though, I figured I must have been gaining muscle and some fat due to stress of my career change and my relationship. This went on for another year, over that year I had a lot of stress due to family issues and my symptoms got worse, as far as memory loss, poor circulation, swelling, heart palpitations, etc. In March of 2009, I gained another 8 lb, "ballooning" up to 25% body fat - But I was exercising just as much as before, and eating very healthy and within the calorie range I should be. I also need to add that I started getting injured frequently, which I just blamed on overtraining from work. I developed ligament problems and have severely stiff joints. I am only 33 years old, I walk like I am 90 when I get out of bed due to stiffness, like I have arthritis. In December of 2009, I bought some clothes in my normal size 6, and they did not fit! I tried an 8 and they did not fit either! Finally a 10 fit! Before mirena, I was a size 4! I also found it difficult to get new clientele because of my rapid weight gain. I was tested for hypothyroid and it was within normal range, but my doctor put me on natural thyroid hormone to balance it out anyway - she told me I should get the IUD removed. In January of 2010, I weighed myself, and had my bodyfat tested using hydrostatic bodyfat testing - which is the most acurate form of bodyfat testing. I was up to 32% body fat! Once again, I have had a lot of stress in my life, so I just figured it was the stress, but according to my doctor, the IUD has caused my weight gain - I have gained almost 40 pounds!!!! The doctor who put me on thyroid meds told me to try those first. Earlier this month, I had severe pelvic pain. The pain was so bad that I fainted again. I went to the OBGYN and she said it could be the IUD, but she wasn't sure, that she didn't think that the IUD whould result in significant weight gain or fainting spells. She told me to go to my hormone doctor. I went to the doctor and the doctor told me to have the IUD removed ASAP, that it is what is causing the fainting, weight gain and joint pain. My OBGYN did notice how bloated my belly is. I am now gaining weight at a rate of 2 to 5 pounds per week, the more I exercise the worse it is - the doctor says it is because my body thinks I am depriving my "baby" of nutrients. Which totally makes sense to me now - because when I was pregnant I gained significant amounts of weight..I am hoping when I get this IUD out that I can get back to normal again!!!!!! My doctor says I may have to go on bio-identical hormone replacement to replace natural progesterone because the synthetic progesterone is blocking my ovaries ability to function and produce normal hormonal balance. She said right now I am estrogen dominant - which increases risk for estregen dominat cancers such as ovarian and breast cancer....I have a family history of Ovarian cancer.

Way to go, net! Starting your own page to help women find one another and information is an awesome way to take charge.
For those using the Mirena IUD or who are interested in the known side effects, here's a link to the list on Rx.com:
The most common side effects listed are uterine/vaginal bleeding (including spotting, irregular bleeding, heavy bleeding, oligomenorrhea and amenorrhea) and ovarian cysts. These side effects are reported in about 10% of patients.
About 5% of patients reported such side effects as abdominal, pelvic, back or breast pain or tenderness, vaginal discharge, nausea, headaches, weight increase, acne, decreased libido, depressed mood, vulvovaginitis, dysmenorrhea and hypertension. The site also lists side effects experienced in less than 5% of the population.
Never forget that every individual can react differently to every drug, and to talk to your doctor if you're concerned about any negative side effects.
Many of the Mirena's negative side effects were not posted on their website or in their brochure 2-3 years ago when some of us had it inserted. Also, many of the negative side effects do not appear for many until after having the Mirena a good 6 months to a year. For those who want to be critical and negative please realize, these issues/effects are not just created or in these women's minds. They are very real and very very difficult to deal with both physically and emotionally. Yes, the Mirena has worked great for some women(including my best friend) but it has also been a very horrific experience for others, including myself. I had it removed 3 weeks ago after having it for 3 years and I really do feel so much better.
OH. MY. GOD. This is just the site I needed to read today. I am crying as I read this...I'm 33 and have had the Mirena for about 15 months. The first 6 months were pretty okay, then I quit having a period. Then the weight gain started and I now weigh 30 pounds more than I did when I was 9 months pregnant with my 4th child. I am miserable. I hate myself. My back hurts every day, severely, my ankles hurt so bad in the evening that I can hardly make it up and down the stairs, I have migraines (although I always have). severe depression (which again, has always been an issue with me), heart palpitations and dizzy spells. I am a huge blimp. I have an unbelievable appetite (just like when I was pregnant), but even though I am eating less, I am STILL gaining weight. Just went to a new primary care physician today and she recommened having the Mirena removed. Called my ob/gyn and they said that he couldn't get me in until July 15 (it's June 9). I told them that if someone doesn't take it out this week, that I will do it myself. Sooo, tomorrow at 8am, I am getting this monster removed from my body. I don't even care that I will start having periods again, periods are much better than not wanting to shower because I have to look at myself naked. I will update you guys on how I feel after.
To the people who are posting stories of how great the Mirena is....I agree that it probably is for some, but some may want to wait until they have had it in longer before they decide how "wonderful" it is. AND, regardless, it definitely may be a fantastic thing for some people, but that still doesn't mean that people shouldn't be warned of the side effects before this is put in. I love my doctor, he's awesome, but all he told me was how wonderful this IUD is, not any of the negative things that go along with it. EDUCATE YOURSELVES....I wish I would have. Thanks for reading.
MIRENA PORFORATED MY UTERUS!! I had the Mirena IUD put in 8 weeks after I had my daughter. I was not given any medication to dilate my cervix which I found out later that I should have been. It was the worst pain of my life, far greater than labor. I did have bleeding which was comparable to a regular period. The follow up ultra sound showed that everything was in place but I was scheduled for another one. After a couple weeks I started to experience extreme constipation and quick intense abdominal pain. I was assured by the Dr that the constipation was not related and the pain was normal. When I went in again they couldn’t see the IUD using the standard ultra sound so I had to have an internal one (very unpleasant). They could not see it then either but assured me that it was probably because I had not consumed enough water (whatever that means). I was then scheduled for a CT scan which confirmed the IUD was sitting horizontal but my Dr.s still claimed it could be in my uterus but it would have to be removed. I was scheduled for an immediate appointment at the hospital. I had a hysteroscopy which confirmed the IUD had perforated my uterus and was resting against my intestines. They tried a laparoscopy (going in through my belly button) but couldn’t remove it so I had a laparotomy (cutting open my abdomen). The IUD was removed and I now have a 3 inch vertical raised scar that itches constantly. I am also considered a high risk pregnancy which is heartbreaking after having two wonderful pregnancies and labors. We still want kids we just wanted to wait a few years while I finish nursing school. My husband and I have a pending lawsuit against my Dr’s office. PLEASE DON’T USE MIRENA!! And please excuse all spelling and grammatical errors.

 holy crap! i wish i could have found this site a long time ago i had mirena inserted feb of 2008, i still have it in and i want it out!! ever since ive had this crap i have been so BITCHY, mean, i was told that my body would "adjust" to mirena and just wait 6 months to a year for the side effects to go away. yea they have not weakened only worsened. i wanted to get this removed and i was telling myobgyn my symptoms, she said well it will still cost 250$ for removal. i wanted to crap! it had cost me that much to insert (office fee) i can not believe that so many women are experiencing the same problems as me. the most recent thing now is that my lower abdomen gets very bloated and just hurts like hell when i bend or sit, my back pain is terrible but i am still told that my body will adjust. yea just wait till i run in that office and jack up the dr for not listening to me. and i was never informed of side effects like the ones other women are experiencing. i am making an appt to get this junk out!!
I had the IUD placed in me about a year ago. I was bleeding and having severe cramps is the reason. The doctor said that it would stop the bleeding and cramps. Well it did stop the bleeding and the cramps is another story. I have been to the emergency room alot since the IUD was placed due to cramps. I have been very tired and very ill with mood swings. I have had a discharge and bloating. My marriage is in a strain. My husband and I cannot at all have sex because it hurts me to bad. I miss work due to the cramps and just feeling bad. I don't know how much longer I can live this way. I would rather be dead then keep feeling like this. My husband and I are on the break of divorce. I have 4 children here that I cannot tend to like they need to be because of the way that I feel. My job sends me home due to me looking sickly. That just happened this past week when I went to the hospital. My tubes are tied and I have had 2 ectopic preg. and have had cervical cancer 2 times. All of this was before the placement. I wish they would take this product off of the shelves. I am going to look for a attorney. This company needs to realize what damage this product is causing women out there. Not only the woman but also the people around her. Please help if you can on giving me information about a law suit. Something has to happen. and happen fast. my email is email@example.com and my phone number is 864-228-7236 or 864-684-1548 and my work is 864-876-0476 my name is Autumn Welch
Anyway, doing research about IUD's... I found that this is how they work. If you do happen to get pregnant with an IUD inserted, the fetus aborts. The IUD causes you to have a spontaneous abortion. I didn't know that at the time ~ or I would never have had an IUD. This Mirena one can't be any better. Wasayo Quoting: She's right. The hormone's in this "IUC" are supposed to make the environment inside you unsuitable for fertiliztion to occur-but it still does at times. When this happens- an early miscarriage- or abortion occurs depending on how you look at it. Its definately not a very Christian form of BC. I had mine in for 4 years and had so many health problems I had 4 surgeries and was hospitalized several times and was expected not to live at one point. All my tests have revealed an unidentifiable cause for my problems and I'm not the only women with these issues. I recently got my IUD out and some of the symptoms are resolving- otheres are not expected to ever go away- based on what others have experienced. The fact is- it takes A LOT for a drug to go off the market (SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE TO DIE-literally, AND SO FAR- MIRENA HAS ONLY DISABLED HUNDREDS AND RUINED many LIVES) and a class action suit is in progress. Before I got sick I worked in healthcare- including pharmaceuticals for 10 years so I have seen this before. The best thing you can do is EDUCATE YOURSELF before you do or take anything that will alter your body. With modern medicine: what saves one person's life can kill another. I tried to be educated when I got Mirena, but when I got it- the information about side effects that is available to patients now: wasn't when I got it.
SIDE EFFECT WARNING....
Sepsis As of 1999, four cases of Group A streptococcal sepsis (GAS) out of an estimated 1.3 million MIRENA users were reported. All four women experienced the symptom of severe pain within hours of insertion, and this was followed by sepsis within a few days (of insertion). All recovered with treatment. Since death from GAS is more likely if treatment is delayed, it is important to be aware of these rare but serious infections. Aseptic technique during MIRENA insertion is essential. (GAS sepsis can also occur postpartum, after minor surgery, in wounds and in association with other IUDs.) PID warning to MIRENA users All women who choose MIRENA must be informed prior to insertion about the possibility of PID and that PID can cause tubal damage leading to ectopic pregnancy or infertility, or in infrequent cases can necessitate hysterectomy, or can cause death. Patients must be taught to recognize and report to their physician promptly any symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease. These symptoms include development of menstrual disorders (prolonged or heavy bleeding), unusual vaginal discharge, abdominal or pelvic pain or tenderness, dyspareunia, chills, and fever. Perforation An IUD may perforate the uterus or cervix, most often during insertion although the perforation may not be detected until some time later. If perforation occurs, the IUD must be removed and surgery may be required. Adhesions, peritonitis, intestinal perforations, intestinal obstruction, abscesses and erosion of adjacent viscera have been reported with IUDs. It is recommended that postpartum MIRENA insertion be delayed until uterine involution is complete to decrease perforation risk. There is an increased risk of perforation in women who are lactating. Inserting MIRENA immediately after first trimester abortion is not known to increase the risk of perforation, but insertion after second trimester abortion should be delayed until uterine involution is complete. Ovarian Cysts Since the contraceptive effect of MIRENA is mainly due to its local effect, ovulatory cycles with follicular rupture usually occur in women of fertile age using MIRENA . Sometimes atresia of the follicle is delayed and the follicle may continue to grow. Enlarged follicles have been diagnosed in about 12% of the subjects using MIRENA . Most of these follicles are asymptomatic, although some may be accompanied by pelvic pain or dyspareunia. In most cases the enlarged follicles disappear spontaneously during two to three months observation. Surgical intervention is not usually required.
